Crafting Character: Our Approach To Curating A Collected Space

Styling

How we design our spaces to feel to intentional and lived in.

Are you drawn to the lived-in luxury aesthetic but are struggling to blend your cherished family heirloom with your new Lulu and Georgia accent chair and this weekend’s garage sale find? Well, you’re not alone! Embracing this style can be challenging, but this is where we shine. We’re here to show you how to seamlessly blend the old with the new for a beautifully curated and collected look.

Here’s how we do it.

TIP NO. 1: INTENTION IS EVERYTHING

When curating a design, we always begin by considering the space’s narrative—the story your home tells about you, your family, your history, and the memories you’ll make. What does this story look like to you, and what mood does it imbue?

Each piece that goes into your space should be weighed by significance and its contribution to the space’s narrative. Whether they’re family heirlooms, vintage discoveries, or contemporary accents, opt for pieces that tell a story or evoke specific feelings.

TIP NO. 2: CREATE COHESION

We firmly believe in the philosophy that “design rules exist to be broken.” However, when blending the old with the new, we’ve found that a few simple guidelines are invaluable for creating a cohesive space.

  1. Emphasize selecting pieces with exceptional craftsmanship and a storied history; this contributes to the depth and authenticity of the design and sparks meaningful conversations with guests.
  2. Avoid overcrowding the space with too many items, and instead, leave ample space between furnishings and decor elements. Negative space creates a sense of balance, clarity, and visual rest, allowing your collected design to shine without feeling cluttered or overwhelming.
  3. Ensure that the design looks good and also serves its intended purpose. Consider how each item enhances the space’s functionality, whether providing storage, seating, or improving the overall atmosphere. This practical approach ensures that the design remains both stylish and functional.
TIP NO. 3: LAYERED TEXTURE CREATES DEPTH

We favor texture over color when we source vintage or heirloom pieces to add visual intrigue and depth. We love how varying textures create tactile experiences that engage the senses, making the environment more immersive and approachable. Don’t be afraid to mix and match styles, materials, and patterns to create a dynamic and eclectic look. Embracing diversity adds personality and charm to the space, reflecting your tastes and experiences. This imparts a real sense of lived-in luxury and elevates the space with an inviting ambiance.

As you embark on curating your space with personality, remember that each piece contributes to the narrative of your home—reflecting your unique history, values, and aspirations. Select items that evoke emotion and let go of those that no longer resonate with you. Your home should be adorned with treasures that bring joy and meaning to your life. If you aim for that, your design will be flawless.
